When I was young, I played with Barbie. Most girls my age did.... but there were some Barbie dolls that weren't meant for anyone.
But let's talk about how Barbie became what she is today almost sixty-six years ago. Who created her... why? And what about the live action movie that people can't stop talking about?
Barbie wasn't really started until after another doll...named Lilli, came on to the scene. It looked exactly like a Barbie Doll did.... but there was one thing; it was not meant for girls. Lilli was a comic strip character that someone created a doll after for... men and let's leave it at that.
A couple years went by....and a young woman noticed most of the girls would play with baby dolls and she wanted to change that.
Ruth Handler created Barbie for her daughter, which the doll is named after. Barbie was born in 1959 wearing a striped bathing suit.
Girls.... loved it. Soon Barbies started to explode into something amazing. Ruth created another doll. A male one named Ken that would end up being Barbie's girlfriend then ex-girlfriend. The thing is.... Ken is the name of Ruth's son.
Barbies were everywhere. Then....some changes came around. There were other versions of dolls that were considered Barbie's sisters. Skipper was her teenage sister. There soon was another sister named Stacy, and a baby sister named Kelly.
Barbie had so many siblings and friends.... that some of them.... ended up discontinued because it had problems or gave kids bad advice or was even spying on us.
There was a male doll named Allan. He was Ken's best friend and was dating a girl named Midge. Midge ended up being pregnant. She ended up being discontinued too. There were other discontinued dolls like....
Earing Ken, Talking Barbie (which would say things like Math Class is tough) A Barbie doll with a video camera attachment. Sugar daddy Ken.... there were so many of them.
Barbie has been in videos before.... but they were mostly computer animated movies that were about the Nutcracker, Princess and the Pauper, one with fairies... there were too many to name. Some of them had interesting voice talent.
Tim Curry voiced a rat, Martain Short voiced a villain.... there were so many and some of them were entertaining.
I saw Oppenheimer and loved it. Barbie....I was hesitant to see at first. But people were starting to say how good it was that I should give it a watch. Let's just say, my past childhood with Barbie dolls were not...a pleasant experience and I don't want to relive it.
I eventually gave in a couple of weeks ago and....well... I liked it. I watched it in early July, ironically around Margot Robbie's birthday (she plays Barbie) and I thought it was very good.
Barbie has an existential crisis after having thoughts about real world life and wanting to die. She eventually realizes she used to be someone's toy doll.
She finds the girl, only to realize it was her mother that was actually the person that had Barbie not her daughter.
Ryan Gosling did a great job portraying Ken and having his own views when entering the real world and changing Barbie world once he goes back.
So yeah, he's the supposed villain or just a doll lost in the real world. Margot Robbie did a great job making Barbie becoming human.
Barbie has changed within the years. From different versions to different body types. Even famous people became Barbie dolls. We've had a Barbie doll that had Down Syndrome to another who was transgender.
Barbie is really showing how there are so many people in the world and that Barbie is making a difference unlike long ago.
Sadly...I don't play with Barbie dolls anymore, but I'm happy that not only a movie came out but there are very different versions of Barbie dolls that all of us can enjoy. Even a movie can bring out the best in Barbie.
