Starburst-Candy and history

Ever had a candy you crave every day? Ok maybe not every day, but you enjoy. Don't you ever wonder how it got it's name as well as how it came to be. With this candy, it's not chocolate, but it's a solid and chewy at the same time.

They were originally called Opal Fruits back in the UK. The original flavors at the time were strawberry, cherry, lemon and orange. They came to the US with a different name soon coming up with "Starburst" the chewy hard candy. I love the strawberry flavor the most and I dislike lemon.

They eventually came out with different flavors through out the year. Tropical, all red with not only cherry and strawberry, but watermelon and fruit punch flavors as well. There's also a duo flavor where one flavor is mixed with another. There used to also be a lime flavor until it was discontinued.

Starburst became more popular that it started to expand to lollipops, hard candies and recently gummy Starburst. I think I'll stick to regular. No offense and all, but having the classic starburst with those four flavors (three for me) is what I like the most. They even have one that is like the gummy Starbursts, but they're called air puffs.

Sadly, there have been discontinued items of Starburst like Fruit twist. Think of twizzles with Starburst flavors. I think there were other flavors as well as hard candy editions of Starburst that just didn't hit with markets. I think they got rid of the fruit twists because Twizzles paid the Mars company to discontinue the product.

Their Starburst ads were pretty weird around the 2000's. One of them was the most annoying one it became popular in YouTube and media itself. It's about two teens talking about a Berries and Cream flavored Starburst. Suddenly, a young boy dressed in 1600's style clothing comes over and well...you have to see the ad, because if I explain it, it'll be in my head forever. But it annoyed a shit ton of people.

I feel the Starburst ads are similar to Skittles like a Scottish-Asian man explaining about contradictions having Starburst be both hard and juicy.

Starbursts are here to stay that's for sure. I like them, mostly the original flavor. They might change it in the future, discontinue some and even make different flavors. But hopefully they don't make stupider commercials. Even Skittles is going the route of stupidity when it comes to their ads as well. Till then, enjoy a Starburst and feel it being hard and chewy at the same time.
