We all love Pringles, and we would remember them mostly from the tube shaped can that provides the 'crisps' for our enjoyment. But there is also the mascot. But...there has seems to have been a change that some people haven't noticed yet. And after reading this, you will see why the mascot is not the same as it used to be.
Created by Proctor and Gamble in the 1960's, people haven't noticed a potato chip in a can. The inventor of this ingenious snack, Frederic Baur, designed the can so none of the chips would break inside. (Although, they do) The mascot was created with it as well. The name Pringles came from a street name in Ohio where Baur used to live.
I remember the early 80's version which made the Pringles man smile more. The rosy cheeks were gone and he had a full head of hair. The mascot would soon change to the mascot we knew long around the 90's. Frank Baur retired and Proctor and Gamble took over the operation of Pringles as well as the mascot changing.
There were two versions of this new Pringle man that came around mid to the end of the 90's. One that had a red background around him, and one without. I remember both. This Pringles mascot pushed his hair up, added a bow tie as well as pupils in its eyes. More expressive.
Now....starting last year, we got...
THIS! No round face, no hair; just eyes, a mustache and hair! WHAT THE HELL! The first time I saw this, I was just surprised. It seems this is just a floating mustache with eyes and a bow tie. I don't understand, but then again, mascots can change over time.
From the way they look, to the way they present what they are selling. From chips, to cleaning toilets as well as selling real estate. Things change. Some good, and in this case, bad.
We've had some horrible mascots before. Like Arby's with that talking oven mitt. The horrendous Squid Monkeys from somebody's fever dream to promote sandwiches at Quiznos. At least this new Pringles Mascot isn't that bad. They even changed the chuck-e-cheese mascot to a small little rat.
Change will happen in product mascots. We sometimes have to accept it. But it will be a long time for us to accept this. At least people are still buying Pringles and not all the cans have that horrid looking mascot on it. They have the other version as well.
