How? Well....Let's start with Fast times at Ridgemont high.
The Similarities: With it being high schoolers and how they live throughout the day. Having after school jobs at a mall; wanting to get 'laid' before graduating high school. Their experiences and life, kind of a similarity to "Dazed and Confused"
The Differences: I guess would be in the story as well as the cast. There are these two girls that work at the mall in a pizzeria. One helps the other find a way to "get laid" as her older brother has a crush on her friend. Phoebe Cates plays that hot girl that Judge Reinhold, the other girl's brother, jerks off to as he fantasizes about her.
There are other differences as well with Fast times as with Sean Penn's character Spakoli. A failure as well as a pot smoker. Does things that contently go wrong. Even pissing off his history teacher as he eats food in his class.
What happens at the end?
It seems Jennifer Jason Leigh's character went along with having sex with another guy, although, she soon finds out love might be just more important than sex.
Judge Reinhold gets another job after being fired from a burger restaurant that he was the best employee of. He ends up working at a convenience store. Saving himself, and Spakoli from a burglar. That's where it ends.
Eleven years later, came Dazed and Confused, starring unknown to be a star, Matthew McChaunahey
The Similarities: taking place in the seventies, but told around the 90's about a bunch of high schoolers who want to do nothing but get drunk. Enjoying their last day of school as well. How to celebrate? Taunting Freshman, getting high and enjoying life.
The Differences: mostly with the story as well as the cast. I even read that they had to postpone production for a while after Matthew McChaunahay's father died. The songs they have in it are pretty memorable. As well as the cast.
Some of the lines that were quoted in this movie are memorable as well. Especially Matthew's character, which he based on his older brother. "I get older, they stay the same age."
Ben Affleck has a role in the movie as well. Known for paddling Freshmen asses. Back in the seventies, I don't know if that really happened, but well....I wasn't born then.
Yes, both Dazed and Confused and Fast time at Ridgemont High have their similarities and their differences, but which one di I like the most? If I have to choose....Dazed and Confused. I think I understand the story more about people wanting to escape from their lives and not deal with authority figures.
Some movies can be similar as well as different, but why do these two, feel somewhat the same? Is it the writer, the storyboard, the creativity that involves high schoolers? I don't know. All I know is these two mirrors are a mirror of each other in every way
