Imaginary friends could be anywhere and they start when we are kids. I had imaginary friends, that were invisible to people. I'm not ashamed to say that, they were there for me when I was lonely.
Many kids, I bet, were like that. In the playgrounds, in backyards. Lonely kids, making friends to thin air, imaginary people so they would have a companion.
They could be villains, they could be heroes, they could be a little kid.
On the cartoon network show, "Foster's home for Imaginary Friends" it revolves around a boy and a friend of his, who is afraid to lose his friend when his mother tells him that his imaginary friend has to go.

He soon finds a place not far from his home called "Foster's home for Imaginary friends" that is run by a sweet old lady and a strict imaginary rabbit of hers. Her granddaughter takes care of watching over a few special imaginary friends that the boy and his friend
It was a great show and it lasted a couple of seasons and specials and a movie. I miss it. It was special bringing back the meaning of an imaginary friendship
Imaginary friends will be there forever. No matter how old you get.
