First off, it's more like a tradition to us now to visit my grandfather's grave up in old forge ever since 1995.
Me, my mom, her sister, her mother and sometimes my brother, would travel the two hour distance to Old Forge, PA. Not far from Scranton, but it is a long trip. We just talk, or fall asleep as mom drives all the way to Old Forge. My grandmother, feeling achy on the car rides, that's for sure, and my aunt either sleeping, or driving part of the way.
The food, I guess, would be a tradition as well. Every year, since the first time we went, we would always, pick up some bread and pizza shells at a nearby bakery, and across the street from the bakery, we would grandma's old house. My mom and her sister lived in that house for a long time. But my grandmother couldn't deal with the long distant drive we took almost every year so she decided to move a little closer to my aunt's house in 1999. But, we would still go and look at the house and how it has changed. It has changed drastically.
After seeing my grandfather's grave, and putting a flower on it, we would go and my visit my grandmother's father's and brother's grave as well. Her youngest brother, Daniel, died prematurely, so I never met him.
Then we would go out somewhere for lunch, and then, we would go to Jitty Joe's an ice cream parlor only in old forge. No where else. I don't know why they won't franchise, because they have the best ice cream ever, and we could only get it so often. We also pick up some 100 pizza slices at this place called Sizzle Pi. My dad adores those Sizzle Pi slices, but believe me, we all are addicted to it and long car ride back is just torture, not to just sneak a piece, but what are you gonna do. I only like it once in a while, but my dad loves it. Well, that's how I usually spend my Memorial Day weekend. Till then, Caio Bloggers, and don't forget, have a safe and happy memorial day.
