If you ever heard of the phrase, "COME ON DOWN!" Then you know what show I'm taking about. Already fifty years old (no joke) The Price is Right, was part of American History. But how did it get its start? What is this show about? Why is it so goddamn popular?
Back in September 1972, The Price is Right began its debut with host Bob Barker and Johnny Olsen. Years went by as different announcers moved on. Bob Barker stayed host for over 35 years. He announced his retirement in 2007 and many people were wondering who would replace him? There were many options from Rosie O'Donnell to.... well, I totally forgot. But they settled with comedian Drew Carey
Drew Carey was no Bob Barker, but he did pretty well hosting. Some people were concerned if Drew would destroy the reputation of the Price is Right. He didn't. He made it just as fun to watch as it was when Bob hosted. I grew up watching this show since I was in middle, maybe high school. It was entertaining and there were a lot of memorable moments.
Contestants had to guess prizes in order to win games. There were interesting pricing games like one wrong price where contestants had to guess which price was wrong to win the three prices. Bonus game where you had to pick four prices and see where the bonus is to win a trip or a new car.
The most memorable game ever in this show is Plinko. Plinko is where you collect chips to get over 20,000 dollars and maybe have a chance to win over 100,000 dollars. It is the most popular game in this show. There were others that are popular as well, but you win prizes like a new car, a trip and money. If I was on a show like that, I would go for a game where you would money. Not a car.
The best thing a contestant would win would be a very expensive car. Sometimes they would win it. Other times, they wouldn't. It seems everyone wants to win a new car. One time, during a special car edition episode, the most expensive car was shown and was worth over half a million dollars. No Joke
The models are important on the show too. However, there were scandals on a few of them during the 90's. Bob Barker would call them Barker's Beauties. After his retirement, some of the female models stayed, and years went by when new models came in. Soon, recently actually, they have placed some male models on the show to make it equal for both men and women to model for the show on stage. Some of them were memorable and others...well, you had to read what happened to them.
There were some contestants were caught cheating. Some had scandals. One of the most memorable was one contestant who went all the way to final bidding for prices on a car or a trip, or whatever. This one man bid twenty-three thousand seven hundred forty-three dollars. The bid was exact. Drew was shocked as well as the other contestants. It seems, after that they had to change everything on the Price is Right. The contestant never watched the show again. Or is dead.
Another exciting thing that happens on the show is in the final showcase, they win both showcases. It seems the contestant has to bid $250 dollars or less to win both prices. Sometimes, like in the case of that one man, they might get the price right on the dot. It is fun to see someone win both showcases.
Already fifty-one years later, this show has remained the most watched game show on tv. Going through many contestants, excitement and even double show case wins. There isn't another show like it. All you have to know if the Price is Right.
