Never being a fan of cereals, I realize some of them are not good for you. But what cereal caries the most sugar, and what has changed since the health craze of today? Has cereal changed for the better, or the worst?
Knowing the history of these cereal products, some had to change their names and ingredients by the 90's. Sugar Crisp became Golden Crisp. Sugar Smacks....now Honey Smacks. Even some cereals, even if saying they were containing less sugar...still have sugar. But here are a few atrocities that are considered high in their sugar content.
CHEERIOS- the first finger food for infants and toddlers. I used to eat this when I was little. Now...I don't care for cereal (or the smell of oats) Times have changed. Cheerios is supposed to lower your cholesterol and be 100% heart healthy. With only two grams of sugar, Cheerios has made promises in their field of having a heart healthy breakfast. I feel, if you don't add a lot of sugar in this one...it's safe to eat, but I'll skip it.
FROSTED FLAKES- back in the 50's they had the word sugar in their names. By the end of the 80's they were just known as Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. They had many mascots, but a tiger named Tony beat them all to the punch. Their ads have kids playing a sport after eating Frosted Flakes. Tony the tiger is trying to be health conscious, I understand. However, if you just eat Frosted Flakes for breakfast without any protein or anything else but the milk, you're losing something, and maybe gaining weight in the process.
RICE KRISPES- This cereal not only has a regular version, but a chocolate one, a frosted one and much more. So I think it's safe to say...Rice Krispies does have sugar added. Four grams, but adding more to a Rice Krispies Treat recipe would make it worse. Even if those three mascots of elves are trying to get kids to listen to their cereal to hear it Snap, Crackle and Pop. I think they're trying to lure kids to an unhealthy cereal as well.
ALPHA-BITS- Remember trying to spell your name in your cereal? Alpha-bits was a breakfast known back in the 60's. Now, it's vaguely known to completely gone. Alpha-bits was full of sugar to sweeten the letters. Even adding marshmallows to the vowels A,E,I,O,U and sometimes Y. Now...it's all in the past. Was it the sugar, or the lack to value? Kids these days.... will never know.
LIFE- Remember the cereal that had the "Hey, Mikey!" ad? If so, it was Life cereal. A cereal that had multi-grains and vitamins (or so they think). Having 8 grams of sugar, and many other flavors like Chocolate, Vanilla and Cinnamon, yeah...they had sugar. They even had a commercial that showed kids not liking the cereal without even trying it. Even at the point of hiding.
HONEYCOMB- A cereal that consists of 13 grams of sugar, well...is it supposed to be healthy for kids? Back in the day, they would have ads with celebrities that would "Honeycomb big, yeah, yeah, yeah." The late Andre the giant was one of them, and I think a robot too. All we know is...Honeycomb cereal is sweet...sweet...sweet.
RAISIN BRAN- Don't care if it's a Kellogg's, Total or even Post Raisin bran. All of them have sugar. How many grams though? Roughly 17 to 26 grams of sugar. But with some brands, Kellogg's might be the most memorable for their sun character scooping 2 scoops of raisins. But...that's false advertising right there, as some people have measured how many raisins are really in their raisin bran cereal. Only 1 and a half to only one scoop. LIARS!
PEBBLES- Fruity or Cocoa, they both are sugary. Named after a character in the Flintstones series back in the sixties, both cereals were made out of rice as well as doused in sugar. Nothing but sweet sugar. So...they made other flavors that cinnamon, birthday cake, even Dino cereal. This is not what the creator of the show would have wanted, but then again....would he care? At least the brand of the Flintstones are still alive today.
Everything we eat will make us sick. From cereals doused in sugar to unprocessed meats and other foods that will us ending up in the hospital. Whatever you do...if you love cereal, that's fine, but don't forget to eat other stuff like fruits and vegetables that will help you stay healthy and be active. Characters will always be on cereals like a bird craving chocolate to a rabbit who won't get his cereal. Whatever happens, enjoy the foods you eat...in moderation.
